The advantage of killing with kindness

So I've talked before about that nasty co-worker in my office
There are about 12 or 13 of us in the office - give or take on any given day - and she is the only one who I have trouble with.
I think she is bitter with life.
When she DOES warm up she tells me a lot about how she has to do everything at home because her husband has a back injury, the crazy amount of debt she has... and it goes on and on.
So I get it.
She has a MAJOR chip on her shoulder.
But I just can't imagine letting that chip rub off on other people around you.
Maybe it's just not in my nature - but it makes everyone uncomfortable and I hate people to be uncomfortable.

Anyway, today she walked in the door.
She was SO freaking rude.
Like, it's insane how rude.
I couldn't understand it.
But she had her hair styled differently.
It was actually really cute.
I took that opportunity to tell her how I REALLY liked her hair and that it made her look so young and cute.

Well.
That was enough to break down those walls.
Guess who is my best friend today?
Yah - bitchy office lady.

My mom taught me this.
And I thought she was insane because really? If someone is being a hag, all you want to do is dish it back.
But if there is one lesson in life that I will pass on to my children - it will be that you always kill people with kindness.
I truly believe that what you put out into the world you will get back.

So the next time someone makes you want to beat the living life out of them - breathe - and try to kill them with kindness.
It's an amazing thing.

  2. Maybe that positive comment was all she needed :) I guess you just never know when your kindness will pay off! It's definitely what I try to do too.

  3. this is so awesome and so true...although i don't really follow it because when people are being rude, i just shrug and turn away.

  4. completely agree! It's so so so hard sometimes but man does it make you feel good :) And I agree with Kelly, she probably really needed that compliment and I'm sure it made her day.
